Diagnosing Down Syndrome With Blood Tests

To confirm the Down syndrome diagnosis, the doctor may request a blood test called a chromosomal karyotype, which looks at a person's chromosomes. The karyotype of a person with Down syndrome will have an extra chromosome 21 (see Causes of Down Syndrome).
