Down syndrome is a condition caused by a genetic problem related to chromosome 21. It results from the presence of an extra 21st chromosome (trisomy 21) and is not caused by environmental factors or any behavioral activity of the parents. The disorder is usually the result of a random event that occurs during the formation of reproductive cells. Common characteristics of Down syndrome include mental retardation, a flat facial profile, an upward slant to the eye, and learning disabilities.
