Down syndrome is a disorder caused by an additional chromosome 21, also known as trisomy 21. The condition is usually the result of a random event that occurs during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs and sperm). There are several established risk factors for this disorder, including having a baby previously with Down syndrome, increasing maternal age, and carriers of a balanced translocation. Down syndrome is often associated with characteristic facial appearance, poor muscle tone, and mental retardation.
